About the museum
The Antico Frantoio in Massa Marittima, on Via Populonia, is an olive mill dating from the 18th and 19th centuries that preserves the complete equipment for pressing olives. The museum documents a rural civilisation that no longer exists and shows how olives were processed with the power of animals and people.
The building was restored in the 1990s and included in the municipality's museum network. Inside are the original elements of the mill: the large wooden-peg toothed wheel, the granite millstone and the oak press. Also on display are the bruscole, woven straw bags used in pressing, the measures used to sell oil by retail, and the implement for toasting barley. At the entrance is the equipment of the oil sales room.
The mill is part of the trails on traditional trades in Massa Marittima, together with the Antica Falegnameria and the Museo della Miniera.
