About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo del Podestà, a building dating from 1225 that overlooks the Piazza del Duomo in Massa Marittima. The original core of the collections is the Galli collection; over time, finds from excavations in the area were added, arranged in a chronological route from the Palaeolithic to the Etruscan period.
The route occupies two floors and is divided into three sections: the Galli collection, the prehistoric section and the Etruscan section. On the ground floor the prehistoric part presents finds from the area's caves, two life-size reconstructions of Palaeolithic and Neolithic cave dwellings, a space devoted to archaeospeleology, and the Eneolithic statue-stele of Vado all'Arancio, from the 3rd millennium BC, very rare in the Maremma.
The Etruscan section occupies the upper floors and consists mainly of materials from excavations at Lake Accesa: grave goods and objects from the Etruscan settlement of the Archaic age, between the mid-7th and 6th centuries BC, with ceramics, bronzes and iron objects. Models, explanatory panels and reconstructions accompany the visit.
