About the museum
The civic collection, set up in 2001, is housed on the top floor of the medieval building that was the first town hall and later hosted the municipal theatre. The display occupies two rooms. The first introduces the history of the area with maps, charts and old views from the 16th to the 19th century, and a selection of objects from the Roman period to the modern era.
The second room presents ancient and more recent finds in chronological order, documenting life from prehistory to the present day in a border and crossing area between Umbria and the Marche in the Apennines. In Roman times a post station called Helvillum arose here, linked to the Via Flaminia, and became a place of some importance.
Among the themes of the display is the goddess Cupra, worshipped in Umbria and in the nearby Picenum: an Umbrian inscription in Latin letters from the 2nd century BC, found in 1868 and now in the National Archaeological Museum of Perugia, records the construction of a sacred enclosure. Another theme is the Via Flaminia, opened in 220 BC, and the Roman bridges that mark its route in the area.
