About the museum

The museum occupies Casa Cajani, an elegant 18th-century noble residence in the centre of Gualdo Tadino. The first floor houses a section of the Museo della Ceramica, which displays the civic collection: pieces produced in Florence, in the Pesaro-Urbino area, at Deruta and in Naples, alongside Gualdo's own production, with rooms devoted to Alfredo Santarelli, to the manufactories born in the 20th century under his influence, and to Paolo Rubboli, who brought the technique of gold and ruby lustres back to the town.

The three floors below contain the archaeological museum dedicated to the ancient Umbrians, the people of the Tarsinates. More than 1,500 finds, dating from the 13th to the 3rd century BC, make it possible to reconstruct the life, economy and exchanges of central Italy, with imports from Etruria, Latium and Picenum.

The rooms present the oldest materials from the settlement of Colle i Mori and the necropolis of San Facondino, excavated by the heritage authority (Soprintendenza) between 1993 and 2009 together with a sanctuary, and the necropolises identified in the early decades of the 20th century by the archaeologist Enrico Stefani. Among the best-known pieces is the inscription in the Umbrian language that marks the boundary of the city of Tarinas.
