About the museum
The Rocca Flea takes its name from the nearby river Flebeo, later called Feo, already mentioned in documents of the 12th century. Over the centuries the troops of Frederick Barbarossa, of the pope and, in 1208, of Guelph Perugia settled there. Damaged by the conflicts, it was restored by Frederick II around 1242. After 1350, when Perugia regained control of the town, the keep was built, on which the Perugian griffin still appears beside the civic coat of arms.
In the 16th century the fortress became the residence of papal legates, and its rooms were adapted and frescoed. From 1888 it was used as a prison. Recent restorations have returned it to its earlier appearance, and since 1999 it has housed the civic museum.
The route is divided into three sections: the archaeological one, with finds that document the settlement of the area from prehistory to the Middle Ages; the ceramics section, with 19th- and 20th-century works in gold and ruby lustre that document the city's ancient craft tradition; and the picture gallery, with paintings from the churches of the area, including the polyptych by Niccolò di Liberatore, known as Alunno (1471), and works by Matteo da Gualdo and his followers. In the 10th-century church incorporated into the fortress there is a fresco of the Trinity in the iconography of the Vultus Trifrons.
