About the museum
The antiquarium is dedicated to the archaeological excavations carried out on the hill of Cesclans, in the municipality of Cavazzo Carnico, where the pieve of Santo Stefano stands. Before the research, the history of the site was intertwined with legends and folk tales; the excavations confirmed that the hill has been inhabited since at least the first centuries of the Romanisation period.
The first church known from archaeological evidence dates from no earlier than the 8th–9th century and had an entrance tower. The building was later rebuilt and extended in several phases, the last of them in the 18th century.
The small collection is part of the Rete museale della Carnia (CarniaMusei) and shows the development of the site from the Roman period to the modern era.
