The route runs through nine rooms of the museum and gathers legends, customs and beliefs linked to herbs and plants in Carnia and other areas.
The museum grew out of the ethnographic collections begun around 1920 by the geologist and scholar Michele Gortani, who gathered objects of everyday life, old trades and folk traditions throughout Carnia. It is considered one of the most important ethnographic museums in the Alpine area of Europe and belongs to the CarniaMusei network.
It is housed in Palazzo Campeis in Tolmezzo, a building of 17th-century origin arranged on three wings around a courtyard. The portico retains two 14th-century frescoes and the coats of arms of the municipalities of the Bacino imbrifero montano del Tagliamento; the courtyard is closed by a small loggia with stone vessels and farm tools and leads to the garden, a former terraced broili (traditional enclosed garden), also used for temporary exhibitions and concerts.
The collections occupy three floors and about thirty rooms, where settings such as the Carnic kitchen, bedrooms and the dining room, with mostly 18th-century furnishings, are reconstructed, along with craft workshops (carpenter, blacksmith), weaving, ceramics, the mountain pasture (malga) and the world of the cramârs, the Carnic itinerant peddlers. Masks, popular religious practices and traditional music are also documented.
