About the museum
The Colombarone archaeological area, in the Parco San Bartolo, was investigated between 1983 and 2008 by the University of Bologna together with the Soprintendenza (heritage authority) and yielded a late antique villa, a basilica and a parish church (pieve). The residence dates from the late 3rd century; numerous mosaics dating between the 4th and 6th centuries are still visible. In the 6th century the representative sector was converted into a Christian church, the basilica of San Cristoforo ad Aquilam, surrounded by a burial ground.
The Antiquarium is housed in the nineteenth-century small church recovered by the Comune di Pesaro. The archaeological area reopened to the public in 2016 and the Antiquarium in 2019. A multimedia video introduces the route with a reconstruction of the villa's rooms, rich in coloured wall coverings and painted decoration.
The small museum tells the story of the excavations, from the identification of the site by Annibale Degli Abbati Olivieri, and displays the finds: from the residence, lead pipes, ceramics, bronzes, glass, tableware and amphorae; from the basilica, a stained-glass window, fragments of the marble iconostasis and a rare multi-light lamp (polycandilon), found together with a small hoard of coins and liturgical glass chalices.
