Museum dedicated to Gioachino Rossini on the piano nobile (main floor) of Palazzo Montani Antaldi in Pesaro, with a route through ten rooms of relics, scores and multimedia.
To mark two hundred years since the first Parisian performance of Rossini's opera, the exhibition presents manuscripts, historic editions, archive materials and iconography, as well as photographs of productions from the Rossini Opera Festival. The route winds between Casa Rossini and the Museo Nazionale Rossini.
About the museum
The Museo Nazionale Rossini is dedicated to the composer born in Pesaro in 1792 and occupies the piano nobile (main floor) of Palazzo Montani Antaldi in the historic centre of the city. The museum opened in 2019 as part of the “Rossini 150” project, promoted by the municipality of Pesaro with the support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Pesaro; the scientific curation of the material was entrusted to the Fondazione Rossini.
The palace was built in the 16th century for the Montani family and took on its present neoclassical appearance in the 1780s, to a design by Tommaso Bicciaglia. The vaulted rooms of the piano nobile were frescoed with mythological subjects between 1777 and 1781 by artists of the school of Giannandrea Lazzarini. After various changes of ownership and the serious damage suffered in 1944, the building was bought in 1983 by the Cassa di Risparmio di Pesaro and restored between 1986 and 1991. Since 1995 it has housed the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio.
The route unfolds over ten rooms and is conceived as an opera: an Overture in the Sala degli Specchi (Hall of Mirrors), two Acts devoted to his youth and success in Italy, and to his maturity, his Parisian sojourn and his death, and a multimedia Intermezzo. On display are paintings, busts, relics, original scores, librettos and stage sketches, partly from the Fondazione Rossini, together with video projections of productions from the Rossini Opera Festival.
