About the museum
The Antiquarium of Loreo was established in 2004 in the town’s civic tower, in the Po Delta, with the aim of promoting the historical and artistic culture and traditions of Loreo and the delta area. It is run by the municipality.
The core of the collection comes from excavations of the Roman farm villa at Corte Cavanella, carried out from 1981 to 1990 by the regional heritage authority (Soprintendenza). Three display cases show objects from the Roman period, mostly kitchen vessels and common pottery, together with glass, bone pins and terra sigillata tableware produced in workshops in northern Italy.
The first room offers four educational panels on the history of Loreo. The second is dedicated to river navigation and holds the bottom of a Roman boat and a flat-bottomed wooden boat, the first of this type found in Veneto, along with transport amphorae and a model of the site.
