About the museum

In 1989 the Swiss artist Kurt Laurenz Metzler bought an eighteenth-century farmhouse at Iesa, in the municipality of Monticiano, near the Terme di Petriolo and about 25 kilometres from Siena. The sculpture park took shape in the large green space around his house-studio, conceived together with the critic Enrico Crispolti and the artist’s wife, and inaugurated on 7 July 1995.

The park covers about four hectares and houses over seventy works spanning about sixty years of activity. Brightly coloured hominid figures predominate, made of marble, aluminium, bronze and painted resin, representing passers-by in everyday life who use nature as a stage: Crispolti described it as a “teatro da strada” (street theatre).

After the artist’s death in Zurich in December 2024, the site is managed by the Estate of Kurt Laurenz Metzler and remains open to the public. The Iesa studio has not yet been fully catalogued, and the archive is being opened gradually. From 2026 an audio guide with the artist’s voice is planned.
