About the museum
The Antiquarium of Sasso Pisano, in the municipality of Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina, holds the most important finds from the excavations in the Bagnone area, a thermal and sacred complex used in the Etruscan and Roman periods for the hot waters of the geothermal zone. The site is considered a unique example of Etruscan baths and, given its size and position, is linked to the “aquae volaterranae” mentioned in the Tabula Peutingeriana.
The display cases feature a lead-and-tin statuette of Minerva, a small votive bronze of a donor in the Volterran style, coins from the Imperial period (3rd century AD), a terracotta basin and roof tiles with inscriptions in Etruscan characters. The museum stands in an area marked by boric fumaroles and medieval washhouses that are still in use.
