About the museum
The museum occupies part of the Clarisse complex (former Poor Clares convent) in the centre of Massa Marittima, which now also houses the municipal library named after Gaetano Badii. The building was constructed in the 13th century as a convent for nuns following the Rule of San Damiano, later associated with Santa Chiara, and the nuns remained there until the 19th century. The church, the convent and part of the cloister can still be recognised; recent restoration and archaeological investigations have revealed many elements altered over time.
The Risorgimento section has long origins: the collection of memorabilia of the patriots of Massa was created together with the civic museum in 1867, thanks to donations from citizens, and the library returned to the Clarisse complex in October 2008.
The display, which is small in size, presents objects that belonged to the around four hundred people from Massa who took part in the Garibaldian expeditions and the struggles for Italian unification: a few red shirts (camicie rosse), medals, publications of the period, objects collected on battlefields and two Italian flags. Weapons, rifles, pistols, bayonets and sabres are not yet on display.
