About the museum
The municipal Antiquarium was opened in 2002 in the former town hall of Acqualagna, a building probably dating from the 16th century, at the junction of Corso Roma and Via Marconi. Its name recalls the ancient Roman city of Pitinum Mergens, whose remains lie at Pian di Valeria, in the Pole area, about four kilometres from the present town centre. The museum is founded, owned and run by the municipality.
The core of the collection consists of finds from the Colombara rustic villa, excavated by the University of Urbino between 1995 and 1997: a Roman farm that documents how an agricultural estate worked from the Republican period to the early Imperial age. On display are, among other things, herringbone-pattern floor fragments, fragments of amphorae, coins of the Imperial age and reconstructed loom weights.
The route also presents the Roman territory of Pitinum Mergens, with the theatre, sections of aqueduct, a thermal building and mosaic floors. Temporary exhibitions are held on the upper floor.
