About the museum
The museum opened in 1995 in the Loggia dei Mercanti, one of the two parts of the Palazzo Pubblico in Cagli, the seat of the municipality. The building dates back to the 13th century; it consisted of the Palazzo Grande and the Palazzo del Podestà, and in 1476 it passed to Duke Federico da Montefeltro, who had it converted into a ducal palace to designs by Francesco di Giorgio Martini.
The exhibition is spread over two floors. On the ground floor are objects from older collections: Greek and Magna Graecia vases, a bust, minerals and fossils, coins. On the first floor are finds from archaeological excavations in the area, with material ranging from protohistory through the Roman period to the Middle Ages.
One section is devoted to the use of brick in ancient Cale, the Roman settlement along the Via Flaminia from which Cagli developed. The museum is part of the city’s network of museums and can be visited with a combined ticket together with the Torrione Martiniano.
