About the museum

The archaeological park is located in Baragiano, in the locality of Toppo Sant’Antonio, and includes an archaeological area with a royal tomb of the 6th century BC discovered in the locality of Santissima Concezione, as well as a landscaped green area. The ancient settlement stood on a plateau between two tributaries of the Platano river, in a strategic position between the territories of several Lucanian tribes and along important trade routes towards the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts.

The ruler of the Lucanian people of the Peuketiantes was buried with weapons of Greek type: a helmet, shield, sword and spearhead. The pottery and the cauldron from the grave goods are decorated with scenes of Heracles, Dionysus and Theseus.

The visit is presented in a playful form, with theatrical displays, music, riddles and games, and recreates aspects of everyday life across two centuries of Lucanian history. The display is aimed mainly at schools. The Municipality of Baragiano now presents the offer as “Archeoparco del Basileus” and “ArcheoXCape”.
