About the museum
The Museo-Antiquarium Civico di Caggiano is housed in the former Convent of the Reformed Friars (Padri Riformati), in Via Palatucci, and holds in particular the archaeological materials from the funerary monument of the Insteii. The exhibition spaces cover about 146 square metres on two floors and six rooms; a branch in the historic centre adds a further 33 square metres.
The collection brings together artistic, historical, demo-ethno-anthropological and archaeological holdings. Among the collections are an archaeological display with monumental finds and a medieval tomb, an antiquarium set up by the heritage authority (Soprintendenza), a permanent exhibition of the State Police (Polizia di Stato), an exhibition on brigandage (brigantaggio) with about one hundred images, one dedicated to the cabinetmaker Fortunato Cafaro, and an exhibition on Gandhi created from donations by the Indian embassy. The museum also holds a historical archive from the eighteenth century onwards and an archive on the Neapolitan Republic of 1799.
At the Medieval Castle of Caggiano there is also the archive donated by the Isoldi and Pucciarelli families and the permanent exhibition of the artist Carla Viparelli. Next to the museum is the municipal library “Nicola Lamattina”.
