About the museum
The Museo archeologico provinciale is located in Potenza, in the Santa Maria district, on Via Ciccotti, with a second entrance at Via Lazio 18. It is run by the Province of Potenza, which has included it in a cultural hub with the aim of protecting, conserving and enhancing the archaeological heritage of the area and of hosting exhibitions, conferences and workshops on archaeology education.
The building has five levels. The first floor houses the permanent archaeological exhibition, which illustrates the chronological and cultural path of the three great population groups of ancient Lucania (Oenotrians, Greeks and Lucanians) from the Archaic age to Romanisation. The ground floor and the second floor host temporary exhibitions, while the first basement floor holds the store of the museum's archaeological materials.
The finds come from various areas of the region, particularly the Metapontino, and span from the Palaeolithic to the Roman age. Among the best-known pieces are a bronze Corinthian helmet and the statuettes from Monticchio.
