About the museum
The Museo archeologico nazionale di Muro Lucano opened in 2003 in the former bishop's seminary, a 16th-century building that belongs to the monumental complex with the cathedral, the episcopal palace and the curia, near the castle in the upper part of the town. The seminary dates from 1565 and is considered the oldest in the region.
The project came about through collaboration between the peripheral bodies of the Ministry of Culture, the Region of Basilicata and the Curia, which granted the use of the building. The museum is now run by the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali della Basilicata (Regional Directorate of National Museums of Basilicata).
The rooms present archaeological material from north-western Basilicata in four sections: the settlement of Baragiano, with a reconstructed stretch of an archaic necropolis; the Lucanian phase, with finds from the ancient centre of Raia San Basilio and from the Hellenistic sanctuary of Fontana Bona in Ruoti; Romanisation, with material from the Roman villas of the area and their mosaics; and a section devoted to the work of the archaeologist.
