About the museum
The Roman villa of Malvaccaro is the only Roman-era villa discovered so far in the city of Potenza. It was identified in 1973 in an area that today lies within the Poggio Tre Galli district. The visible structures date to the 3rd–4th century AD, but traces of earlier phases from the two preceding centuries have been found. The building was abandoned in the 6th century and part of it was then used as a cemetery; much later the area became a farmhouse.
The complex follows the villa-praetorium model common in ancient Lucania and was probably an agricultural production site from the outset, as well as a place to host distinguished guests. Among the rooms are a coloured marble floor, the dining room with a polychrome mosaic of herringbone-patterned triangles and a central panel with the Three Graces, and a northern room with a masonry dining couch (triclinium).
The site was restored by the Ravenna mosaic school. The Municipality of Potenza acquired it in 2018, and the villa reopened to visitors in summer 2019.
