About the museum
The Archivio Museo storico di Fiume was established in Rome in 1963 by the Società di Studi Fiumani, founded in Fiume in 1923 and re-established in exile in 1960. It is located in the Giuliano-Dalmata district near the EUR, which grew out of the workers’ village built for the 1942 Universal Exhibition and was later inhabited by exiles from Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia.
The museum, housed in a room on the lower floor of about 250 square metres, revolves around a central shrine in memory of the Giuliano-Dalmatian dead. The route begins with a documentary overview of the exodus and continues with original memorabilia and documents on the history of Fiume, from its Roman origins to the Second World War: urban, monumental, school, administrative, religious and cultural aspects linked to the city’s Italian identity.
On the second floor are the archive, with more than 80,000 documents and collections of personalities from Fiume, and the library, with about 7,000 volumes and a periodicals collection of publications printed in Fiume. A room with thirty seats also houses works by artists from Fiume from the 18th century to the present. The institution is recognised by law 92/2004 on the Giorno del Ricordo (Day of Remembrance) and is supported by the Ministry of Culture.
