About the museum
The Roman villa dates from the 1st century AD and originally stood directly on the lake shore, near the entrance to the present Cartiera di Toscolano. It covers more than 15,000 m² and had a monumental front loggia with side wings. An inscription found nearby suggests that it belonged to Marcus Nonius Macrinus, consul in 154 and proconsul of Asia in 170–171; the Nonii family owned several properties on the lake.
Over the centuries the building was remodelled, with an important phase in the first half of the 2nd century AD. The complex has been only partly excavated: today the southern sector is visible, with a few accessible rooms where parts of the wall decoration survive, including painted imitation marble, and geometric mosaic floors.
