About the museum
The Museo Territoriale del Lago di Garda was conceived and set up by Professor Luigi Bertamè, a local historian who devoted his life to the ethnographic study of his home area. After a long period of research and collecting, it opened on 7 May 2011 in the former Palazzetto delle Esposizioni, in the courtyard of the Town Hall, on the Lungolago Regina Adelaide.
The collection brings together objects and tools used until the first half of the twentieth century in fishing, agriculture, crafts and the everyday life of the lakeside communities, saved from inevitable dispersal. The route occupies four large rooms and is organised into sections on fishing, the fish trade, folklore, agriculture, livestock, crafts and extractive activities. The recommended visit starts on the second floor, in the fishing room: fishing sustained the people of the Benaco for centuries.
Among the displays is a reconstruction of the Pal del Vo, a marker pole once placed between Punta San Vigilio and Sirmione, used by fishermen and boatmen and removed about forty years ago after a boat collided with it, with some original pieces. Since May 2017 the collection has also included a study project on the biodiversity of the Val dei Molini, curated by a local secondary school.
