About the museum
The archaeological area lies in Contrada Bagnoli, about three kilometres north-east of the town of Capo d’Orlando. Here a thermal complex dating to the 3rd century AD has been uncovered, which in all probability formed part of a private residence within a larger Roman settlement.
The building extends for about 32 metres in an east-west direction and comprises six rooms. Three of them, the tepidarium and two calidaria, have mosaic floors with geometric black-and-white motifs and red inserts, likewise dating to the 3rd century AD.
The pottery finds show that the site was in use from the Hellenistic period into the Byzantine age. An early phase of reuse, linked to a production facility, dates to between the middle or second half of the 5th century and the beginning of the 6th century AD; a final phase, of the 7th century AD, is documented by a stone pavement covering the rooms of the calidaria. A selection of the finds from the territory is displayed in the Antiquarium Comunale “Agatirnide”, in Via del Fanciullo.
