About the museum
The museum was founded in 1903 as the Antiquarium Tuscolano, to collect finds from the area of Tusculum, the ancient Latin city on Monte Tuscolo. The two world wars scattered the collections; from 1950 the Soprintendenza alle antichità e belle arti di Roma helped to recover them.
The museum now occupies the ground floor of the Scuderie Aldobrandini, a 17th-century building restored by the architect Massimiliano Fuksas, in Piazza Marconi in Frascati. The archaeological collection covers a span from the protohistoric period to the Middle Ages, with particular attention to the Republican and Imperial periods, and includes many pieces excavated on the Tuscolo.
A historical-artistic section presents ten wooden models of the Tusculan villas, rare prints and medals linked to the Renaissance villas and to figures from local history. The museum organises educational activities, exhibitions and guided tours.
