About the museum

The Museo del Vino of Monte Porzio Catone is a civic museum established in 2022, when the Comune approved the project for the new municipal museum hub. Its mission is to protect and promote the local history and culture of winemaking, understood as the whole of the tools, practices and knowledge of a collective farming tradition; the heritage is of a demo-ethno-anthropological nature and counts 84 objects. The museum is part of the Organizzazione Museale Regionale and is run, on behalf of the Comune, by a cultural cooperative.

The venue was created by restoring the former railway station of the line to Monte Compatri. The exhibition route is in a disused tunnel, opposite the Parco Gramsci, where the train once passed underground; the former Stefer building in Piazza Trieste houses the reception, the bookshop, the café-wine bar and the info point, while on the upper floor, also reachable by lift, there is a room for courses, lectures and events.

The visit tells three thousand years of viticulture in Lazio through objects, gestures and rural memories, archaeological finds, ancient winemaking tools and interactive installations, set in the volcanic landscape of the Castelli Romani. The museum organises guided tours, tastings of Frascati DOC wines, courses and masterclasses, activities for schools and group itineraries combined with the Scuderie Aldobrandini in Frascati and the Parco Archeologico di Tuscolo.
