About the museum

Pitinum Pisaurense was a Roman municipium, inhabited from the end of the 3rd century BC to the 6th century AD, and remains the only Roman town in the eastern Montefeltro. It stood about one kilometre from the centre of today's Macerata Feltria and was destroyed by the Ostrogoths during the Gothic War.

The archaeological area lies beside the medieval parish church of San Cassiano in Pitino, in whose walls many Roman and medieval materials were reused. A 12th–13th-century cemetery was built over a large paved Roman road, identified as the decumanus maximus, which is still visible today. In the southern part the remains of a bath building have been excavated, in which the suspensurae of the calidarium can be recognised. Excavations in the 1970s and 1990s affected the baths and the upper part of the city.

Along the church a reconstructed stretch of the Roman road can be walked, enhanced also thanks to the work of volunteers. Inside and along the north side of the church, Roman and medieval walls are visible, partly protected by glass and lit, while the finds recovered from the site are kept in the Museo civico archeologico e paleontologico di Macerata Feltria.
