About the museum
The Privernum archaeological park lies in the locality of Mezzagosto, about 5 km from Priverno, in the province of Latina. Twelve hectares of open-air excavations reveal the urban layout of a Roman colony founded at the end of the 2nd century BC and inhabited until the 12th century AD.
The city occupied a favourable position between the hills and the sea, between the Via Appia and the Via Latina, and the Amaseno river connected it to the port of Terracina. It is not a single monument but an entire city, with streets, squares and houses, still legible on the ground.
The visit route passes the city walls, the houses of the Republican period with large atria, peristyles and mosaic floors, a porticoed square with shops, the imposing remains of the theatre, the imperial baths built after the 2nd century AD over the remains of an abandoned house, and a large early medieval church-cathedral built between the 6th and 11th centuries. The area is organised as an open-air museum, with educational routes that follow the building history of the city.
