About the museum

The museum is dedicated to Privernum, a Volscian city that later became a Roman colony, founded around the beginning of the 1st century BC in the Amaseno plain. The route takes visitors from the protohistoric phases of the area to life in the Roman city and presents the results of about thirty years of excavations carried out in collaboration between the Regione Lazio, the Comune di Priverno, the heritage authority (Soprintendenza) and the Università di Roma “La Sapienza”. The guiding idea of the display is the link between excavation and museum: “from the dig to the museum”.

The seat is Palazzo Antonelli, overlooking the main square opposite the cathedral and the old Palazzo della Comunità. The building, with construction phases from the 13th and 16th centuries, was almost entirely rebuilt between 1924 and 1926 by the Antonelli brothers, who restored the Renaissance façade with its sgraffito decoration in amaranth and lead-grey tones. Inside, the ceilings preserve a late Liberty (Art Nouveau) painted cycle by Giulio Sordoni and Pietro Campeggi, restored when the building was adapted as a museum and visible along the exhibition route.

The route unfolds over three floors and twelve rooms, organised by theme to illustrate the stages of Privernum's urban history: from political and religious aspects to economic and social ones, with glimpses of everyday life. The collections comprise more than a thousand objects, including mosaics, statues, portraits, inscriptions, terracottas, kitchen and tableware ceramics and architectural decoration, dating from the 2nd century BC through the whole Roman period, accompanied by educational displays.
