About the museum
The Pinacoteca provinciale di Potenza was set up and opened to the public in 2000 and is run by the Province. It is housed in a building on Via Lazio which, according to a tender of 1905, was to have been one of the pavilions of the provincial asylum.
The route opens with two panel paintings from the workshop of Antonio Stabile, from the second half of the 16th century, restored by the Soprintendenza (heritage authority). The following rooms hold a permanent retrospective exhibition of painting and sculpture dedicated to Concetto Valente, in which works from the 19th and early 20th century predominate.
Among the artists represented are Giacomo Di Chirico, Angelo Brando and Michele Tedesco, as well as portraits by Giuseppe Mona, Vincenzo La Creta and Andrea Petrone. The 20th-century section contains works by Luigi Guerricchio, Vincenzo Claps and Italo Squitieri, alongside works by artists of national importance such as Carlo Levi, Fausto Pirandello and Renato Guttuso. The museum also organises exhibitions and guided tours.
