About the museum
The Museo diocesano di Potenza opened in 2011 and is on the ground floor of the former diocesan seminary, behind the cathedral of San Gerardo. The building dates from 1616, was seriously damaged by bombing in 1943 and was restored after the war.
Most of the works were donated by the bishops who led the diocese, among them Carlo Pignatelli, Gaetano Avigliano, Bartolomeo De Cesare, Ignazio Marolda and Michelangelo Pieramico. The main core consists of sacred furnishings and silverware, 19th-century textiles and liturgical vestments, paintings on canvas and panel from the Episcopio (bishop’s palace) and from the church of San Francesco, and old texts and parish registers.
The display is designed as a dynamic system: alongside the works of the main core, there are items temporarily taken from churches in other municipalities of the diocese.
