About the museum
The museum is located in the former Ospedale di San Giovanni di Dio, in Borgo Ognissanti, Florence. The hospital was founded in 1382 at the wish of Simone Vespucci, of the family to which Amerigo also belonged, under the name Spedale di Santa Maria dell’Umiltà. From 1587 it was entrusted to the friars of the Order of Hospitallers of St John of God, known as Fatebenefratelli (Brothers of Charity), who cared for the poor and the sick there.
In the 18th century the complex was renovated and enlarged, with the vestibule with a double flight of stairs and the church designed by Carlo Marcellini. The friars’ administration ended in 1866, and in 1982 the buildings passed to the Comune di Firenze. Hospital activity was later transferred to the new hospital at Torregalli.
The museum was set up at the end of the 1990s to preserve the memory of the healthcare institution and is linked to a documentation centre and a library in the same building. Much of the historic complex is awaiting a new use.
