About the museum
Casa Devilla is an architectural complex in the centre of Aritzo that preserves intact its original core in the Spanish style, although it is the result of several building phases. It rises over three levels and is introduced by an imposing masonry entrance built in 1889, from which one enters a trapezoidal courtyard.
The Devilla family, members of the agrarian and professional middle class, were from the 19th century the contractors of the snow trade, which is why they were known as the “snow lords”; this activity died out at the beginning of the 20th century. The older part, to the left of the entrance, dates from around the 17th century; the right-hand part, with the courtyard that joins the two wings, is 19th-century. Of the original core, which follows the building conventions of the mountain houses of the Gennargentu, the double carved wooden brackets of the old balcony survive. In the courtyard, paved with local cobblestones and surrounded by a portico, the poet Bachis Sulis died in 1838.
The house is now one of the sites of the Aritzo museum system and houses the Museo del castagno e della cassa intagliata.
