About the museum

The natural science museum of Belvì, a town in the Barbagia di Belvì at the foot of the Gennargentu, holds extensive documentation on the natural heritage of the island and of other regions of the world. The route is divided into six sections and is located in Via Roma, in the town centre.

The first section is devoted to minerals, with about a thousand specimens collected mainly in Sardinian mines, and to about three hundred fossils dating from the Palaeozoic to the Quaternary. Next come entomology, with insects from Sardinia and other parts of the world, including exotic butterflies, and arachnids such as scorpions and spiders. The ornithology section presents about four hundred species of Sardinian birds, including very rare birds of prey; the mammal section has over seventy; malacology brings together more than two hundred types of Sardinian marine shells, madrepores and crustaceans.

The route ends with amphibians and reptiles, about forty-five species, and with cartilaginous and bony fish, about twenty. Among the most striking specimens is a large loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta).
