About the museum
The museum is dedicated to Antonio Mura, a painter and printmaker born in Aritzo on 12 January 1902 who died in Florence on 7 April 1972. Mura trained at the Reale Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, held his first solo exhibition in Cagliari in 1933 and taught at the Liceo Artistico di Cagliari. He is best remembered for religious painting, portraits, especially of children, landscapes and still lifes.
The museum occupies the former municipal building, a late 19th-century structure restored to house the collection. The permanent display brings together the artist’s main works, together with pieces donated to the municipality by private individuals and the family, and works from the town and from the parish of San Michele Arcangelo.
The museum is part of Aritzo’s museum system, the Ecomuseo della Montagna Sarda or del Gennargentu, which also includes the Museo etnografico, Casa Devilla and the Prigioni spagnole di Sa Bovida.
