About the museum

The Ecomuseo della Montagna Sarda is an ethnographic museum of a special kind, located in the Pastissu municipal park in Aritzo and dedicated to the mountain communities of the western slope of the Gennargentu. Eight rooms hold materials on food, traditional clothing and religious and magico-religious practices, as well as on pastoralism, the gathering of snow and ice and the production of carapigna.

Among the most distinctive pieces are a collection of carved wedding chests and caskets, including the Aritzo or barbaricina chest, the wooden sculptures of the painter and engraver Antonio Mura, and tools linked to snow gathering, such as tin and wooden tubs from the 18th century. Also displayed are tin sorbet jars from the 17th century, old chests for bread, linen, grain and chestnuts, and a hand-worked oak press for grape marc.

The museum is part of the Aritzo museum system, which also includes Casa Devilla, Sa Bovida and the Museo Antonio Mura. The ecomuseum extends into the territory with routes such as the Su Caminu ’e is Niargios snow road, with about a dozen snow pits at around 1,500 metres, and the transhumance paths and forest tracks used for gathering hazelnuts and chestnuts.
