About the museum
The so-called Casa di San Tommaso in the centre of Aquino is a typical medieval building, erected in the 10th century under Atenolfo II. It was probably the residence of a local magistrate: above the doorway the inscription “Tomas iudex”, carved in stone, is still visible, and over the centuries it gave rise to the misunderstanding that this was the saint’s house.
The building is striking for the pointed Gothic arch that leads into the courtyard and, to the left of the staircase, the elegant double-light window that adorns the austere façade; recent restorations have brought back the original Gothic windows. The house is run by the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Lazio.
The display includes four original 17th-century drawings by the Flemish artist Otto van Veen, with episodes from the life of St Thomas, and panels with reconstructions of the counts’ palace. In the lower part of the town the remains of the large cylindrical tower that guarded the bridge can also be seen, and just beyond it one reaches the Parco del Vallone.
