About the museum

The house museum grew out of the work of Antonino Uccello (Canicattini Bagni 1922 – Palazzolo Acreide 1979), a poet and scholar of Sicilian popular culture. He returned to Palazzolo Acreide in 1961 after years spent in Lombardy, bought a wing of the eighteenth-century Palazzo Ferla and installed there objects gathered on the Hyblaean plateau, to preserve the memory of a peasant civilisation that was disappearing. The museum opened in 1971 and is today a regional museum.

The route recreates the rooms of rural life: the “casa ri stari”, where daily activities took place, such as baking bread in the wood-fired oven, making ricotta and cheese and weaving on the foot loom; the “casa ri massaria”; the “maiazzè”, the store for provisions and tools; and the olive press, rebuilt on the model of a room already present in the palace.

The collections also include Sicilian ceramics, especially from Caltagirone, wooden spoons and ladles made by peasants, religious objects, ex voto and sacred images, toys, puppets (pupi) and scenery panels from the opera dei pupi, nativity scenes (presepi), wooden sculptures, paintings on glass and wax figurines.
