About the museum
The Museo TEMPO (Museo civico del Tessuto, dell'Emigrante e della Medicina Popolare) was founded in 2000 on the private initiative of folklore scholars: in a house built in the 1920s by craftsmen with the savings of an emigrant to America, the “Casa dell'Emigrante” took shape, soon joined by the Museo del Tessuto. In 2012 the municipality turned it into a civic museum and entrusted its management to the curators, in the premises of the former orphanage “Emanuele Cassarino” in the town's central square. It is part of the network of the Ecomuseo degli Iblei.
The museum is housed in the historic Palazzo Cassarino, a 19th-century building in classical style left by the pharmacist Emanuele Cassarino as a charitable institution for orphan girls, and later the seat of a convent school. After the nuns ceased their activity, the building was acquired by the municipality and renovated with European funds.
The display is arranged in three sections. The Tessuto section exhibits late 19th-century objects of Iblean rural life, such as the cutra ammurgata and the frazzate, woven blankets, and a 19th-century loom. The Emigrazione section uses emigrants' letters, cardboard suitcases and a reconstruction of a departure to tell the story of Sicilian communities in the United States. The Medicina popolare section presents medicinal plants, recipes and the remedies of apothecaries and healers. The museum also has a lecture hall and an educational garden on the terrace.
