About the museum
The workshop-house of Pinolo Scaglione stands at the foot of the Salto hill, along the road to Canelli, in Santo Stefano Belbo. Scaglione was a carpenter and musician and a close friend of Cesare Pavese, who drew on him for the character of Nuto in the novel “La luna e i falò” and for the poem “I fumatori di carta”.
In the novel the workshop is a meeting place: anyone passing by, on the way to or from Canelli, would stop to talk while the carpenter worked with planes, chisels and saw. Even today the house keeps the look of an authentic period craft workshop, with narrow interior spaces, and the wisteria at the entrance invites a pause.
The house has no opening hours of its own: it is visited on the guided tours of the Fondazione Cesare Pavese, which set off from the Foundation’s headquarters and also include the Museo Pavesiano, the church of SS. Giacomo e Cristoforo and a stop outside the writer’s birthplace.
