About the museum
The Collezione permanente del Pastello Soffice grew out of an encounter between Italian and Russian artists. The idea took shape in the mid-nineties and developed after the second Italian-Russian Pastel Exhibition, held in Yaroslavl in the summer of 2000, where Italian artists gave a work to the fine arts museum of the Russian city. In exchange, a group of paintings by Russian painters was offered to Italy thanks to the entrepreneur Silvano Conti; the painter Luigi Carbone, a native of Lequio Berria, proposed the village as the seat of the collection.
The two collections are the result of a cultural cooperation protocol signed in September 2000 between the Province of Cuneo and the Yaroslavl region. The Lequio Berria collection was started in 2001 with a first donation of works by professional Russian artists and was later enriched with works by established painters, until it counted over one hundred paintings.
The works are made in the soft pastel technique, widely used in the 16th and 17th centuries and back in use among contemporary artists. Landscapes predominate, from hills covered with vineyards to the green bends of the Volga. The collection is displayed in the upper rooms of the town hall, and the painter Luigi Carbone has overseen its layout and growth together with the municipal staff.
