About the museum
The house at Castelvecchio Pascoli, on the hill of Caprona, was built in the mid-18th century by the Cardosi-Carrara family as a country villa. Giovanni Pascoli bought it partly with the proceeds of five gold medals won at the Latin poetry competition (certamen) in Amsterdam, and joked that the house had become his with the help of Horace and Virgil. He lived there from 1895 until his death in 1912, and it was the centre of one of the most fertile and serene periods of his output: the surrounding nature and the local people inspired his best-known poetry collections.
The house has seven rooms on three floors and keeps the structure, furnishings and arrangement it had at the poet's death. In the study on the first floor is his library, with about 12,000 volumes available for consultation on request, while the ground floor holds the archive, with manuscripts, letters, photographs, diplomas and personal objects. His sister Maria looked after the house and the collections for about forty years, and as she wished they passed to the municipality of Barga.
The building is listed as a national monument. In the chapel next to the house lie the poet and his sister. The landscape around, with the historic vineyard, is part of the visit, and the museum also offers guided tours.
