About the museum
The museum is set up in the premises of the former elementary school in Molazzana, in the Garfagnana, run by the Garfagnana Gothic Line committee. It holds war and supply materials of the armies involved in the conflict, together with documents, photographs, maps and testimonies about the war in this area.
From late 1944 the Garfagnana was a front line, because the Gothic Line divided Italy: for eight months the fighting caused deaths and destruction, including among civilians. Those involved included, among others, African American soldiers of the 92nd Infantry Division “Buffalo Soldiers” and the forces of the Salò Republic, supported by Germany.
A room is dedicated to the remains of aircraft shot down or crashed in the Garfagnana and the Serchio Valley. On display are, among other things, relics of the Spitfire Mk IX flown by Charles Duncan Spruce, shot down on 13 February 1945 near Cascio, in the municipality of Molazzana, including a machine gun and a cannon.
