About the museum
The museum is housed in the medieval Palazzo Pretorio in Barga, which was the residence of the commissioners and podestà (chief magistrates). It offers a route to explore the area of Barga from the natural, historical and artistic points of view, and is part of the provincial museum system.
The first rooms present geological, palaeontological and archaeological finds tracing the history of the Serchio Valley up to the Roman colonisation: fossils, Mesolithic stone artefacts, grave goods from two Ligurian tombs and small bronze votive figures that bear witness to Ligurian and Etruscan religious practice. Three rooms are devoted to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, with sculptures, goldwork, paintings and polychrome terracottas, and the last is reserved for the Baroque period.
Because the palace was the seat of the podestà and the place where justice was administered, the old prisons can be visited in the basement, with a dungeon and a reconstructed torture chamber.
