About the museum

The archaeological museum is housed inside the Rocca Ariostesca of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, the fortress named after Ludovico Ariosto, who lived here between 1522 and 1525 as governor of the Estense province. The exhibition consists of two distinct sections, opened in different years.

The section devoted to the Mesolithic was opened in 1980 and presents the results of surface surveys and excavations covering this period of the Stone Age in the territory. In 1984 the section on the Apuan Ligurians was added, with finds from Ligurian settlements and a description of the customs and ways of life of the peoples who inhabited the Garfagnana in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC.

The route also includes Iron Age materials, such as terracottas, axes and votive statuettes that document the presence of the Apuan Ligurians from the 3rd century BC until the Roman occupation, and a part dedicated to finds related to the Etruscan presence.
