About the museum
The museum is housed in the former dairy of the Latteria Sociale (dairy cooperative) in Lozzo di Cadore, a 20th-century building from the 1950s and 1960s. The village's first dairy society, the Società Latteria Sociale, was founded in 1884. Its business moved into the present building in 1962 and ceased in 1984 with the arrival of industrialisation.
To preserve the socio-economic roots of the community, its members set up a first exhibition nucleus in 1997. The new display of the Museo della Latteria opened on 24 April 2010. Today the museum is run by the volunteer association Latteria Sociale APS and forms part of a museum hub together with the Roggia dei Mulini (mill race).
The educational route traces the journey of milk, from collection to processing into butter, ricotta and cheese, through to maturing. It includes the cheesemaker's tools, panels, documents, multimedia content and guided routes with QR codes. There is also a room on life in the alpine pastures (malghe) of Pian dei Buoi and a room on woodworking, with models of historic water-powered sawmills.
The guided tour of the Roggia dei Mulini leads to one of the most interesting examples of industrial archaeology in the Cadore, with mills, forges, wash-houses and the Baldovin Carulli hydroelectric power station from 1926, still in operation.
