About the museum
The Museo del Cidolo e del Legname tells the story of the community of Perarolo di Cadore and of the events linked to the timber trade. The village originally arose as Ponteporto, a trading point on river and land routes, and its economy changed with the arrival of the railway.
Perarolo is known as “the village of the cidolo”, an artificial sluice that held back and sorted the logs transported by river floating. In Cadore there were three of them: two at Perarolo, at Sacco sul Piave and at Carsiè sul Boite, and a third at Domegge di Cadore.
The route is spread over two floors. On the ground floor a small introductory room illustrates the exploitation of the Cadore woods, with a map of the timber-producing areas and the tools used in the forest until the mid-20th century, such as axes and sledges for transporting logs. On the first floor, among maps, documents, historical photographs and films from the Istituto Luce, the stages from the forest to the building of rafts are followed. Also shown are the marks stamped on the timber and tools such as augers for boring logs and the anger, the long poles with which the menadàs guided the logs during free floating.
