About the museum
Casa Porfido was opened on 18 September 2011, on the centenary of the founding of the first porphyry quarry in Albiano. It was created through the will of local entrepreneurs and the municipalities of the Cembra Valley, with the support of bodies such as E.S.PO. (Ente Sviluppo Porfido), the Bim dell’Adige and the Cassa Rurale di Lavis Valle di Cembra, to promote the history of porphyry through a building that is also a place for meetings, lessons and events in the area.
The museum occupies an old house in the historic centre of Albiano, carefully restored to keep its original appearance. The building belongs to the Municipality of Albiano, while management is entrusted to E.S.PO., a body founded in the 1970s to spread knowledge of this material. Traditional architecture is combined with multimedia and interactive technologies.
The route, with interactive panels, films, photo collections, documents and historical-archaeological finds, covers the history of the Earth and of the Val di Cembra, extraction and processing methods, the laying of the material and the restoration of disused areas. Visitors learn to tell porphyry apart from other rocks and get to know the trades of the quarry worker (cavatore), the craftsman and the paver (posatore).
