About the museum
Fernando Melani (1907–1985) was an artist from Pistoia who transformed his home into a continuous creative space. In the studio house on Corso Gramsci, the works, which he called “experiences”, occupy ceilings, walls and floors, arranged according to the layout the artist himself wanted, and mingle with accumulated materials and everyday objects.
The Comune di Pistoia bought the house in 1987, together with over 2,800 works, and restored it, opening it to the public as a civic museum. In 2005 the holdings were enriched with 148 works by Melani, which came to the Comune through the testamentary bequest of Donatella Giuntoli.
The route passes through the rooms with experiments on metals, iron wires suspended from the ceiling and compositions of poor materials. Melani’s work lies between Arte Povera, Conceptual Art and Minimal Art and engages with the climate of the Italian neo-avant-gardes of the second half of the 20th century. The studio house is part of the network of the Musei Civici di Pistoia and is visited with an escort and by booking.
