About the museum
The museum was founded in Pistoia in 2008 together with the Fondazione Luigi Tronci. It is based on a collection of percussion instruments assembled over more than half a century by Luigi Tronci, who was linked to UFIP, the Pistoia company known worldwide for producing cymbals for drum kits.
The collection comprises more than 1,000 instruments, sound art works and an archive of documents, books and recordings. An important part concerns the instruments of nineteenth-century musical theatre, with noise-making machines and pieces that belonged to the Milan firm Giulio Ricordi; there are also organs and bells built in Pistoia, and gongs, tam-tams and cymbals produced by the Tronci family.
The museum aims to pass on musical culture to every kind of audience through direct contact with the instruments, guided by musicians, music therapists and craftsmen. Today the collection is housed in the premises of the Fondazione Conservatorio San Giovanni Battista in Corso Gramsci, and shows only a small part of it.
